Spreading Wellness: How are decisions and resolutions similar?

“The first step towards getting somewhere
is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.”
~J.P. Morgan

As New Year’s approaches, you may have expected a blog about resolutions, and inspiration for getting started. Well, E3 is here to meet your expectations. J

Can you recall a time in your life when you made a big decision that fostered growth? Maybe it was simply deciding to go to college immediately after high school, or maybe it was to enter the military or work-force right out of high school. Either way, you made a decision, a plan, and you moved forward. OK, maybe that was partially because your parents encouraged you to get out of the house and spread your wings. But think about it, is there anything that different about a goal that you set now? You still need to make a decision, you still need to make a plan, and you still need support from friends and/or family…so you can spread your wings! So you can make those positive changes that you hold in your heart, no matter how small or large.

It sounds simple, right? But, we all know it isn't easy.

If you need a little extra motivation or encouragement, consider signing up for Wellness Coaching with E3 Twin Ports, LLC. Exercise is at the core of our coaching, but don't let that intimidate you. We provide a non-judgmental environment, and meet you at whatever stage you are at in  life.  We also offer group fitness opportunities both inside and outside, which we believe supplement coaching well. Group fitness can provide a sense of community, belonging, social support, and accountability from your friends...to help you make the process of spreading your wings just a little bit easier.

I encourage you today, to gather some great social support for yourself, as you strive to meet those goals that you hold in your heart. And, as Zig Ziglar said, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great!”

Wishing you a wonderful New Year 2015!

A few people have asked specifically what E3 can offer, so below are a few ads that we have posted with information about our classes. Also, we are open to starting anything movement based (including academic physical education classes) within our realm of knowledge, so if you have an idea, please share! :) If you have questions, or comments, please email us at info@e3twinports.com.

Spreading Wellness: Who helped foster your courage, dreams, and ambitions in life?

As I sit here next to the Christmas tree, I reminisce about my days of youth...and the traditions that we had as a family. Growing up in a Finnish home, sauna and skiing were a large part of our festivities. Winter was always such a magical time of year. The lights, the decorations, the concerts, the music, and the gently falling snowflakes.

This time of year I get a little sentimental, and enjoy time alone in reflection. This year, I've been reflecting upon the people who had a big influence on my life, and one of my Grandpa's comes to mind. As a child whenever we visited Grandpa and Grandma in the winter, we had to bring our cross-country skis, and it was a bonus if we remembered our sleds. Grandpa groomed his own ski trail with his snowshoes, and then went around with his skis to make grooves, and he always liked when we would do at least 1 lap on a visit. As a very young child, I remember the big hills that he would pack, and then watching the big kids go up and down, wishing I could try them...and I remember finally being big enough to try them by myself. Such an adrenaline rush! Always after we finished our skiing, and sledding if we took them, we would pile into the sauna. Wonderful memories... Because he shared his passion for skiing and the outdoors, I was blessed with an understanding and appreciation for outdoor fitness, and it became a part of me.

I believe those wonderful moments of youth, helped me to gain the courage, strength, and ambition to start E3 Twin Ports, LLC. We offer both indoor and outdoor fitness and movement activities, and offer wellness coaching for healthy lifestyle changes. We have teamed up with Duluth XC Ski Club, and will be offering a free technique tip prior to the Wednesday Night Race series that starts in January. For more information about the series, click HERE. This year, DXC has included a "Just for fun, untimed" category, so please join us for the weekly event. Also starting in January, E3 will offer weekly ski lessons on Monday evenings. Our locations will be throughout the Twin Ports, but we are waiting to see where the best snow will be...so stay tuned for more information, and think snow! :)

And as you gather with your friends and family this holiday season, I encourage you to consider who helped to foster your courage, dreams, and ambitions in life. And, if they are still with us, send them a note of "Thanks," or better yet, pay them a visit and deliver your appreciation in person. It is always wonderful to share in each others dreams. And, maybe more importantly, how are you helping to foster the dreams and ambitions of your loved ones?

If you have any questions about our programs, what we have to offer, what you would like us to offer, or any other inquiries, please email us at info@e3twinports.com.

Spreading Wellness: Who has empowered you to pursue your dreams?!

Live Happy, Dream Big, and Smile!
~Jodi L. Tervo~

That has been my motto/mantra in life for the past couple of decades, and most recently I realized what it has brought to my life. Growing up I felt like I was that timid, quiet girl in the corner. The one who sat on the sidelines in social gatherings. The one who was an academic success, but lacked belonging. The one who connected more with adults and children, than with her peers. The one that was older than her biological age, yet loved to play like a child. The child that was seen, and not heard. The one who had a million deep thoughts in her head but rarely shared. The one who watched others having fun, laughing, and enjoying life, and wondering how they had that kind of confidence in a large crowd? The one who was always drawn to others who were left out. Always the athletic person who could play with the best of them, but then never invited to play outside of that moment. Always being able to fall back on athletic ability to "fit in" and have fun, but then not have to talk, because we were playing.

Thankfully, I had very positive parental influence, and positivity was at my core. It wasn't that I never talked, it just wasn't very often. I know that I spread positivity to my classmates, because sometimes they teased me about always being so positive. Although I really was happy with who I was, I also understood that I wanted to break out of my shell.  Like the caterpillar, becoming a butterfly! I wanted to feel like I had a purpose. I wanted to help people. I wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of others. I wanted to help others achieve their dreams. I was the most happy when I could make others smile and be happy...even if they teased me for it, I knew they appreciated my positive words.

In-between my junior and senior years in high school I made a conscious decision to become more outgoing...to improve my voice…it was a many year process, which had subconsciously started a couple years earlier, and sometimes, decades later, I still feel myself revert back to my younger days. But mostly, my family has a hard time keeping me quiet. J I've always been a thinker, a reflector, with incredibly deep thoughts…and as a young teenager I had a teacher that encouraged me to gain my voice…encouraged me to share my thoughts through writing. Looking back, I realize how important that was for empowering me, to speak out, to become the butterfly, and really, why writing has become the mortar of E3’s foundation. Here is my story...

Mr. Olson, my high school English teacher, challenged me to write my own poems in order to heal from life's events/losses. As I reflect upon my journey, I realize how important those words were to me. At that time I didn't feel like I had meaningful thoughts to share with others, let alone, write anything sufficient, especially poetry. I loved reading poetry, and it helped me to heal from life’s losses…but, write my own?! However, with his encouragement, I began writing my thoughts and feelings. He even allowed me to turn papers into him that were for my personal healing. Critiquing and encouraging me to continue.

Early on, when I was still "practicing how to write poetry," I was able to reflect upon who I wanted to become, and what life meant to me. It came back to the simple words, "Live Happy, Dream Big, and Smile!" People always told me that I had a great smile. So I knew that my mantra needed the word "Smile." It was the one thing that connected others to myself. In a world of social beings, it was the one thing that kept me in a group, even if few interacted with me. So early on, these six simple words became my mantra through difficult times, and slowly they became a part of my daily thinking.

Years later, I can see the incredible power that these six words had on my life! I dreamed of having my own business...having the ability to make decisions that made sense to me and those around me, because I would listen to others thoughts and continue to grow. I learned early on in my professional career, that I am a big picture person, a visionary, and a "get it done" person. The “don't just talk about it, do something about it,” sort of person.

Life continued...I always enjoyed helping my clients, no matter their age or ability, which is my strength! I LOVE to empower clients to reach their dreams, and jump over hurdles in life. Cheering them along and celebrating their successes! J But, I was still working for others, piecing together jobs....continuing to journal (to myself)...continuing to exercise...continuing to engage in fun hobbies...continuing to connect with my amazing clients and students...continuing my mantra of "Live Happy, Dream Big, and Smile!"

I had been Dreaming Big, Smiling, and I was Happy. But I knew if I was to truly LIVE my Dreams, then I need to act upon my dreams!...the dream of being a teacher, an entrepreneur, and a leader in holistic wellness...I realized that I in order to reach that dream, I needed to open E3 Twin Ports, LLC! I CAN help people to my fullest potenital! I CAN help spread wellness, spread happiness, spread confidence, and spread seeds of LOVE! All things that I have been journaling (to myself) about for decades! J

After years of practicing my voice through journaling, my confidence has been boosted, and I absolutely love writing! Recently, I started blogging, started sharing these dreams with the world. I am becoming that butterfly, soaring through the highest heights, joyous in celebration, sharing my voice, and my dreams with the world! All because Mr. Olson encouraged me to write my own poetry…he empowered me with the practice of writing...which led me to consider a life mantra, which helped me to soar toward my dreams!

This is one of my many stories that provides a solid foundation for E3. This is why I blog for E3 (Thank you, Mr. Olson)! It has helped to empower me to reach for my dreams, improve my energy, improve my own voice, share positivity with the world, and hopefully, to inspire others to reach for their dreams as well, and ultimately, spread wellnessThrough E3 Twin Ports, LLC, I CAN help pay it forward...just like Mr. Olson empowered me, I can empower others.

At E3, we spread seeds of love, health and happiness when we share positive stories of success. E3 relates our wellness to the beautiful flowers and trees that surround us in our natural world. J  E3 has created a Holistic Wellness Flower, to help the world visualize dreams of wellness. You are at the core of the flower, growing your own flower, in a holistic way, sitting upon the part of the flower that holds the seeds, you are spreading those seeds of wellness as you flourish, and grow, and we, E3, are watering your flower, to help it grow more abundantly! To help grow a beautiful garden of flowers!

By signing up for one of our indoor classes, letting us lead your PE class for homeschoolers, joining us for parent/kid music movement or family snowshoeing, or signing up for the Winter Women’s Wellness Retreat, we together, can help spread wellness, one person at a time! J

Help us reach our dreams, by reaching for your own dreams, and signing up today!

Spreading Wellness: What have you learned from the little things in life?

The beautiful white snow that sits peacefully on top of the trees has been so refreshing; however, I cannot help but reminisce about the days of summer and fall when I was able to drive my motorbike and experience the subtle changes in the environment. One particular fall morning stands out in my mind...As I drove up Haines Rd and overlooked the beautiful flowing waters of the St. Louis River, the sun was trying to send its warm rays through the dissipating clouds. As I approached the top of the hill to turn onto Skyline, my bike quickly died. That should have been my warning.  However, it wasn't until I continued taking in the awe of Skylines views, and my bike started to sputter, that I realized I needed to turn my tank to reserve. So I pulled off and turned the dial. Once again, off and riding. This time, riding on borrowed time, until I could pull into a filling station. As I filled up my bike I pondered....what if life had a reserve tank, subtle warnings to let us know that we need to re-fill our own tanks? Then I thought...life does have warning signs, if we just slow down and listen. I remembered a quote by Mahatma Ghandi, "There is more to life than increasing its speed." If we just slow down, we can be more in tune with our own tank levels.

This is Jodi L. Tervo Roberts here, the owner of a new small business in town, E3 Twin Ports, LLC, Spreading Wellness. I am so excited to begin this new challenge in life; to help spread wellness throughout the Twin Ports community.  E3 Twin Ports, LLC has many fun events and activities planned, and some in the works. We hope that you will be able to join us for our classes, whether inside or outside, or sign up for Wellness Coaching. We want to help you accomplish your New Year's Resolutions! We have limited time only discounts. If you purchase a package for January, the rest of December's indoor classes come FREE! See our website for more offers, www.e3twinports.com.

We have started our indoor fitness classes, Zumba and the Next Level Combo class. We meet in the early mornings on Tuesday and Thursday, 6:15 and 7:30 start times, at Mattevi Martial Arts Academy in Superior, WI. In January our schedule will expand. We will be leading many more classes, both inside and outdoors. We have family programming, programming for stay at home parents, and much more to come. We look forward to you joining us.

We are also leading a
Winter Woman's Wellness Retreat January 30-February 1st,
and we hope that you can join us for this. The retreat will be held at the Historic Lutsen Resort.

Even if you are not personally interested, maybe you have a woman in your life that deserves a wonderful girlfriend's weekend getaway! Consider giving the gift of a hassle free weekend. This is an all inclusive retreat. Participants will engage in Zumba, Relaxation Stretching, and Snowshoeing! Plus, eat delicious meals cooked by the great cooks at Lutsen Resort. If the weather permits, we just might make a campfire and roast some marshmallows! Maybe through attending this mid-winter retreat, it will inspire you to slow down and take time for yourself, so you can be more aware of your tank levels. We are excited to have you along, and we hope you sign up today! Like us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/E3TwinPorts), Email us at info@e3twinports.com with questions, and visit www.e3twinports.com/wellness-packages for more details.

Gift Certificates are available.

Please stay tuned for more information from E3 Twin Ports, LLC, and ask yourself now...What have you learned from the little things in life?  Are you running on reserve? What are your personal filling stations?  These are different for everyone, and it is healthy to slow down and re-fill before you start to sputter.

Spreading Wellness: How will you release oxytocin today?!

"A laugh is a smile that bursts!" ~Mary H. Waldrip

Stairs are clear, no barriers, a look of determination, a look back to see if there will be resistance, none, GO FOR IT! Crawling as fast as her little arms and legs could carry her, she sped off toward the stairs without looking back. Up 3 of them, she turned around to see an adult, but since the adult smiled at her, she put her determined face back on, giggled a joyful giggle, and continued to the top...turning around only to see that she made it, crawling to get away from the edge, and it was then that she paused, and burst into a fantastic smile! Going back to the edge, looking, wondering if she should venture back down, crawling away again, turning and pausing with a look of satisfaction. "I DID IT!," spread across her face, filling herself and those around her with a great burst of accomplishment and excitement!

Those were the days; the days with continuous moments of accomplishment. The days that we celebrated the small milestones in our development, naturally, excitedly. The days that those surrounding us instinctively gave us a high five, and a hug at the completion of a small victory. The days that we lived in the moment, celebrated spontaneously, and easily loved ourselves. The days that we spontaneously and generously released oxytocin within ourselves, and those around us.

Those are the days that we can look back upon for inspiration into our future. Do you remember how you felt as a child when you accomplished something? Do you remember the excitement and joy when your friends/loved ones gave you that spontaneous hug of celebration? Do you remember how you felt when you gave that spontaneous hug to a friend or loved one? Maybe you still give them, and that is fantastic! Have you ever thought about the jolt of oxytocin that those moments gave/give you?

Last week I shared my gratitude for all of my friends and family who are supporting the opening of E3 Twin Ports, LLC. This week, I want to share something else that I am grateful for. I am grateful for the abundance of knowledge in my personal and professional life that has been sparked by TED Talks. Recently, I learned more about the science behind why hugs are so important in life...in the developing child, and in our adult lives as well.

If you have 16 minutes to learn more about the reasons why, you can click on Paul Zak's TED Talk.
http://www.ted.com/talks/paul_zak_trust_morality_and_oxytocin If you don't have 16 minutes to listen, Paul Zak's take home message is: "8 hugs a day will help you to be happier, and make the world a better place."

How do these stories relate to E3 Twin Ports, LLC? Helping to build confidence, empower individuals, and improve the energy of everyone around us is the core of our business! We do this through coaching lifestyle changes, celebrating the small successes, encouraging growth, and spreading wellness. Ultimately, "making the world a better place."

Would you like to be a part of this wellness movement?! Join one of our classes! By enthusiastically, actively, and consistently participating in one of our activities, you can be a part of this movement!  We offer indoor fitness classes, Zumba, and others based on Music and Movement. We offer outdoor recreation activities, and Wellness Retreats. But wait, our offerings continue! You may want to improve an activity that you currently do, if so, personal training is your ticket. OR, maybe you would like help making lifestyle changes, then our Wellness Coaching sessions are right for you. Our highly educated staff can help to coach lifestyle changes, no matter your ability. And, every day, you have an opportunity to mark your progress (through consistent participation/lifestyle change), and every day, you have an opportunity to celebrate your little successes! Every day you have an opportunity to give and receive a hug, releasing oxytocin within yourself, and others, making the world a happier place.

I encourage you to reflect upon your life, determine what your "stairs in the world" are, and choose how you will climb them. Then, celebrate your milestones!

How will you release oxytocin in your personal physiology today? I am empowering you to take that next step toward spreading wellness, by giving a spontaneous hug, and making this world a happier place!

Spreading Wellness: What are you grateful for?

Photo and Artistic Edits by: Jodi Tervo Roberts
Thank you all who helped make this reality! :)
There is a damp chill in the air, clouds rarely part, water falls randomly from the sky, sometimes more, sometimes less, sometimes white, sometimes transparent. The deer have eaten most of the garden remnants, and we continue to process our fall's harvest.

It's the time of year that when the sun shines, it is cold outside, and when it is cloudy, it is "warm." Although I'm dreaming of the suns warming rays, I am thoroughly grateful for the changing seasons. Change means that we are blessed with the opportunity to look forward to something new, new activities, new beauty, and new routines.

We can now close the doors to that which is behind us, and look forward to the peacefulness of winter. Winter...a time of peace, of true silence. A time that I love to snowshoe in the woods, listen to the nothingness, the stillness, and simply be...watching the flakes softly flutter to the ground, gently, quietly, and with intention. Piling up a blanket of insulation for our earth...one that provides us a new reality of ground level. We walk closer to the tree tops as the snow fills in the imperfections along the trail. Snow creates a new outer beauty, a different reality. The farmers almanac says it is going to be another hard winter, so I'm also grateful for the neoprene face mask that I purchased on spring clearance after learning first hand what an early frost bite can do to winter fun.

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is soon upon us, and then only a few weeks until Christmas! Besides this being a time of changing seasons, it is also a time when many reflect upon gratitudeThis winter I am most grateful for the wonderful group of people that have helped to support the opening of E3 Twin Ports, LLC, which will allow me to help Spread Wellness.

I enjoy these changing seasons; however, I have met many people throughout my years in the northland who do not enjoy winter. When I've been able to teach friends about the importance of embracing a winter hobby, they usually change their outlook on our longest season of the year. It is helpful to look forward to these beautiful winter months.

Spreading Wellness: What dream are you pursuing?

Dreams...Have you ever been caught off guard, not realizing that you have drifted off into another world? Daydreaming about future ambitions? Over the past 7+ years, that is exactly what I have been doing, often.

Back in 2007, while working with a patient post-injury, I must have had a dreamy look in my eye. During one of his visits he told me that I should reach for my dreams. Wow! Life really hasn't been the same since. I had been a professional for more than 7 years at that time, working in all medical and educational settings possible for a person with an Associates of Applied Science degree...including travel therapy...liking all of them, but not feeling challenged. I was ready for a change, and those words were all I needed. I went back to school, worked part-time in the medical field, taught half-time at the University, started an adaptive xc ski program, all while conducting multiple research projects in xc skiing, volunteer coaching, and pursuing my MS Exercise Science degree. That was just the beginning.

Upper Peninsula Adaptive XC Ski Program

The ski program was started out of my garage, with pure passion, and no income. I was propelled forward by the amazing participants that came every week for their xc ski lessons, the fantastic volunteers, and local businesses who supported the work! This was my first attempt at starting my own business...grant writing, programming, ski lessons, volunteer coordination, marketing, recruiting, and so much more. This invigorated me!

One day, while walking home from class, my eyes focused on the dreamy future...the one where I would own a business that would focus on exponentially helping people, using exercise and movement as the catalyst...it was on that walk, back in 2007, that I dreamed of my current business name, E3...meant to be Ecubed, as each one of the E's (Energy, Empowerment, Exercise), exponentially multiplies the other.

About 7 years later, after living in the woods, guiding outdoor adventures, and working multiple part-time/temporary positions, in the midst of an economic downturn, I decided to take a leap of faith. I love helping people! I have a passion for holistic wellness, especially outside. I thrive on knowing that people who meet with me are able to create lifestyle changes that are meaningful to them.

This fall, E3 Twin Ports, LLC, was born! What a thrill! So much to do and learn with business ownership, but a challenge that I'm ready for. So much different than a volunteer organization, but still similar, and still invigorating! Excited to be able to help people create lifestyle changes. Excited to help "Spread Wellness." And, excited to help energize and empower people through exercise!

We hope to see you in one of our classes, for training/coaching sessions, and/or at one of our events. Your support will help this Dream become Reality. Now please, share with us: What dream are you pursuing?
