Spreading Wellness: What connections have you made through paddling?

Dreaming...one of my greatest talents. Reflecting and dreaming...two of my greatest talents. Writing, reflecting, and dreaming...three of my greatest talents.

Ever since I had the chance to demo one of Down Wind Sports' Perception Shadow Kayaks, I knew the kayak of my dreams, and I dreamed of it often. There were a few challenges in the way toward accomplishing my dream of purchasing a kayak to explore, adventure, and enjoy the wilderness from a totally new perspective. I had a small recreation boat that was perfect for inland lakes, wildlife paddling, and fishing, but getting onto Lake Superior would open up many new exploration opportunities. I was single and often paddled solo, so I needed to be able to store, load and unload my boat independently. New sea kayaks were out of my budget, especially the light Kevlar kind. I dream big, so I dreamed of a Kevlar Shadow boat, knowing it fits me well, tracks well, and would be easily loaded onto and off of my vehicle solo.

Years went by, and I had decided to make the leap to complete my MS Exercise Science Degree. Around this time of change, I went back to Down Wind Sports...they were having a kayak sale. I asked the owner if he happened to have any Kevlar Shadows in stock that I could drool over, and around a corner and down an isle someone spoke up and said, "I have a used one for sale!" No way - I was stunned. I really didn't have the cash to purchase the boat since I would need my savings for school, but I talked to the guy and decided to ponder it. I went home to ask for advice from a brother that I knew would tell me what my heart wanted to hear - buy it. :) He stated reasons such as, I've dreamed of it for years, it wouldn't "go bad" while I was in school, so after I finished I'd be able to take the multi-day adventures that I wanted too, and how often would I really find the boat of my dreams for sale - used - in the tiny Upper Peninsula? So I went look at the boat, found it to be in pristine condition, and took it home. It was an exciting day!

Soon afterwards, I began meeting fantastic people who helped me improve my skills, and I began adventuring on the great Lake Superior. The lake with a big personality, and full of life. The one that requires skill and knowledge about in order to paddle on it safely.

Little did I know that in 4+ years, when I graduated with my MS - Exercise Science degree from Northern Michigan University, I would find myself unemployed and homeless. While I was up at a Wilderness First Responder Re-Cert course in the Boundary Waters, not knowing where to go from there, an employee of Lutsen Resort's Activity Staff suggested that I apply for a summer gig to get me through while I looked for a teaching job...they were looking for guides specifically with Lake Superior experience.

Little did I know that while sleeping in the peaceful wilderness, packing in and out of the Superior Hiking Trail every day to go to and from work, taking adventurous kayak trips every "weekend" to cover the most beautiful sections of MN's shoreline, that I would meet the man of my dreams. A hard-working man of integrity, fun, and humor. A man who valued conversation and understood the meaning of "seizing moments" in life. A man who was creative, artistic, and enjoyed making things instead of purchasing things. One who lived simply...didn't own a Television, microwave, or a dog. A man who enjoyed the wilderness, mountain biking, jogging, and canoeing in the BWCAW. A man who enjoyed teaching and learning. An amazing father of an adorable little girl, who was also up for adventures.

Yes, that kayak that I had dreamed about for years, turned out to be a key point in my life...it brought me to the love of my life....through adversity, success, challenge, and joy...it was one of the best investments in my life. We settled in Duluth as a newly married couple. My kayak continues to help me make connections, and most recently it connected me with Paddle Duluth. An organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for human-powered watercraft in the Twin Ports and beyond. Paddle Duluth is having its first fundraiser by bringing the "Reel Paddling Film Festival" to Duluth (June 3rd at 6 p.m.)! There will be door prizes, raffle items, and of course, an hour an a half of amazing paddling videos! From all genres of paddling, to local issues. Tickets are limited, and can be found at Ski Hut.

My kayak and paddling skills have brought me many more connections than true love, but true love is certainly the icing on the cake. What is your love story? Did you know that how you share your love story can help determine the success of your relationship? (Watch the Tedx Talk here: Story your way to a happy marriage, by Rachel Terrill)

No, I am not a marriage counselor, but I am an avid positive psychology researcher. I believe that by understanding positive psychology I can better help myself, my clients, and my readers age youthfully, by living healthy, happy, and meaningful lives. Yes, that is what I strive to do as the Owner, Programmer and Blog Author for E3 Twin Ports, LLC.

For me, paddling brought me love - human love, and so much more. Please share with us, What is your love story? and What connections have you made through paddling? (Maybe you will join Paddle Duluth - all are welcome.)

Spreading Wellness: What milestone are you celebrating?

Dreams of earning a degree were shot down multiple times. Seeking a new life that included positive encouragement and growth were vital to future success. It took hard work and passionate self-love to grow into a position to allow positive change. 4 years ago, he was ready, he was open to positive change, and 2 years ago, committed to a lifelong supportive and positive relationship. He overcame and continues to overcome stress and anxieties beyond his control. Together we overcome. We foster a relationship filled with growth, love & reassurance. He is motivated by the past and envisions the future. He focuses on the small steps to accomplish his dreams...counting the semesters off each Christmas and spring. And with the help of his wife, he pauses to celebrate along the way.

Lake Superior College - Spring 2015 Graduation
On May 18th, 2015, Lake Superior College recognized the accomplishments of hundreds of graduates earning diplomas, certificates and degrees. A beautiful ceremony, with brief, meaningful, and heartfelt words from everyone who spoke. The guest speaker, Jennifer Crown, and the student speaker Deanna Keller, both had stories to share that touched the hearts of our family...knowing first hand the depth of their words, and the hurdles they overcame to get where they are today. As the story of Deanna was almost verbatim to my dear hubbies, tears welled up in my eyes. As a passionate teacher at Lake Superior College it made me wonder how many of my students share that same story. Her words made me want to know the stories that brought all of my students to campus - to find that connection - to be there more for them - and lend them an encouraging word when needed...more than I do already - for after hearing these powerful speeches, it made me feel more compassion for my students.

CONGRATULATIONS! We are super proud of you.
Also, congratulations to all of the graduates of 2015!
One of the many graduates that crossed the stage was my amazing husband, a man of heart, passion, strength, and perseverance. Yes, the opening story belongs to him. A man who was also part of the "first generation" graduates. A man who has dreamed for many years of graduating with an engineering degree, and finally had the support and encouragement to pursue his dreams. And now, we are celebrating his accomplishments of the past 2 years, and the future, for he has been accepted into a 4 year engineering program! We are super proud of him!

Pausing this weekend, we celebrated the moment together with family and friends, among the clouds, fog and rain, just like we celebrated our "new beginning" exactly 2 years ago. As a teacher of holistic wellness and positive lifestyle habits, I encourage everyone of you to take a moment to ponder a milestone in your life that's worth celebrating. We all have accomplishments that need recognition. Pausing to sincerely celebrate the moment can be what it takes to motivate continued growth.

I'm sure you have heard about, if not read at least one of the many Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Jack Canfield is the originator of that series, and is also known as "America's #1 Success Coach." His books and writings have inspired me for many years, and when I paused to ponder this weeks blog, Jack Canfield's writings on celebration came to mind immediately. Click HERE to read one of his blogs, where his #6 Strategy is to Celebrate Milestones.

At E3 Twin Ports, LLC, we are absolutely passionate about teaching and educating our community (including our readers) about these positive holistic lifestyle habits. We believe that everyone who participates in our programs will be inspired and empowered to grow or create more positive lifestyle habits, so that everyone can age youthfully by leading a healthy, happy, and meaningful life.

Spreading Wellness: Who's gem will you help shine a little brighter today?

Rocks. They are everywhere, and something about them draws me in. I love pretty rocks. The love of my life laughs at me, because I stash "pretty rocks" in little corners and pockets of my truck...I take them in the house...I stack them up...paint them...and I take pictures of them to hang on the wall. I find a deep sense of peace in rocks. I'm not a geologist, so I usually don't know much about the rocks, but I do know when they are pretty. Nature creates such simple beauty.

Recently, I heard an analogy of a special woman who was compared to a gem, multi-faceted and deep. This made me pause and think about friends, colleagues, neighbors, and all the people that we pass by, but never stop to talk. Which then reminded me of the friendship ball pit youtube video. And, as I'm currently working on putting together a presentation submission for a conference this fall that is focused on compassion, it reminded me about the importance of growing the connections in our community...to get to know the multiple facets that make up everyone. Because, I believe that connection with others comes before compassion.

This past weekend, I led a BWCAW trip with another teacher from Lake Superior College, and on the bus ride up to Sawbill Outfitters we talked about hobbies. It was so interesting to hear about other facets of this colleagues life...ones that if we hadn't been riding a bus for 3 hours, we wouldn't have necessarily known about. Then I spent 3 days with 7 wonderful students, and we talked about everything from religion and politics to food and life dreams. We connected. Back on campus Monday, instead of passing a stranger by, we stopped to reminisce about the trip and how our bodies felt after the intense physical weekend. We were beginning to show and share empathy and compassion with each other...because we got to know, connect, and experience the multiple facets of each other...We got to see the gems within each one of us.

We at E3 Twin Ports, LLC fully believe in the power of connection, and the incredible outcomes that can emerge from deeper connections with members of our community. That is one reason why we designed our group classes, using the outdoors, and experiencing together. We know and understand the science behind connection, positive lifestyle habits, and educating and experiencing together. We have so much more to learn, and are continually doing research on holistic health and wellness. And, we are passionate about sharing what we learn with our clients. Everyone who signs up is able to choose from a list of places to explore and topics to learn about, so every session is tailored to the group as best as possible. We know that clients who feel important enough to share input into the lesson are going to take the most out of it. We know that everyone signing up for our classes is a gem, with multiple facets, and we want to help each gem shine their brightest.

Who is the special gem in your life? Or maybe you have many. Who's gem will you help shine a little bit brighter today? We encourage you today, to ask one person that you pass by to share a little bit more about themselves. Find a connection with them that you didn't know before. Help their internal gem to shine just a little bit brighter, and we believe that in that process, yours will too.

Spreading Wellness: How have you grown through loss?

Early in life I experienced great loss...the loss of inspirational friends and loved ones, to cancer and car accidents. Friends that would have grown up to be great leaders and good people, that would have helped to spread smiles. I remember sitting on the floor of my bedroom, sobbing and wondering the infamous question, "Why?" These moments significantly shaped me into who I am today. For me, the support of positive friends, family and my faith helped me through these times of struggle, seeking quotes and verses about hope and love...always remembering, always compassionate, forever in love. Not easy, but gaining resources and daily support to work through the millions of questions that ran through my adolescent head. Realizing at this young time in life, that we never know how long we have, so it was my duty to live to my fullest potential, and focus on having fun...spreading joy...to try and share positivity and love with the world, just as my former friends would have done. This has been something I try hard to keep at my core. Sometimes it dims, and sometimes it shines brighter. Life is about the little moments...that is one mantra I began adopting in early adulthood. I continue to seek the strength and courage needed to remember this internal mission.

Yesterday, I heard news that one of my friends/mentor, lost of his wife...his dearest friend in life. Both amazing and truly inspirational people. My thoughts go out to him and his family. Reflecting on the positive influence they have had in my life, and knowing the loss that will be felt by all who knew her, it brought back the feelings and memories of all of the losses in my own life...reminding me of this internal mission in life. I remember many times, not knowing what to say to those in need, and simply extending a hug. I learned early on that kindness can be felt, and hugs are a great way to show that love, support, empathy, and compassion. Recently, I was listening to a Tedx by Matthew Leiberman, on our social brain. He demonstrated why social connection is actually the base of Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs, and physical needs such as water, food and shelter are above these social needs. It made sense. If you are interested, click here to watch.

Yesterday, E3 Twin Ports, LLC also gave a "Safety, Body Mechanics, Health and Wellness" presentation for the employees at Northern Engineering. (Thank you, Northern Engineering for hiring us to help with your Corporate Wellness!) Besides sharing and demonstrating the importance of engaging the transverse abdominus and erector spinae muscles prior to performing a squat for proper lifting, we also briefly shared the connection between a happy and healthy "home life" and a happy and healthy "work life." We shared the importance of including friends and family in your wellness plan. Why? We know and understand the importance of social connection to overall health, wellness, and happiness. We learned this at an early age, and continue to research the neuroscience behind social well-being.

The science of social connection is one reason behind our program structure. We have set up group experiences for all of our programs - Retired and Active, Preschoolers, Elementary ages, and everyone in between. For more information on our programs, please visit our "Wellness Packages" page. All programs have limited space, and registration closes 2 weeks prior to the start dates. If you have questions, please send an email to info@e3twinports.com. We are excited to help spread wellness throughout our community through these outdoor wellness programs, and we hope that you and your friends will join us.

Did you know that friends and family, social connection, empathy, and compassion are vital to our survival? We encourage you to share your story about adversity, support, love, encouragement, hope, and how you grew through the experience. We never know how our stories can help someone else in time of need. We never truly know who we inspire by sharing our story. We encourage you to let your words of support and encouragement ripple through sharing.
