Spreading Wellness: Are the best days for frogs, also the perfect days for making memories?

The forecast called for rain, high winds, and our ride was planned for Stillwater, which was on the border of the "intense weather" zone. The alarm went off at 5:00 a.m., a time that sounds insane for many, but normal for us morning work-out junkies. My first thought as I heard the rain outside was one of gratitude. I was so grateful for the warm bed and solid roof over our heads. We had thought about camping, but decided to crash at a relatives house instead. The wind and rain would have had us soaked and cold before we started. After enjoying our warm cups of joe and tea, we hit the road for a 40 minute drive through solid rain to the start line of the MN Ironman Bike Ride in Stillwater, MN. Both of us wondering if they were going to cancel the ride, maybe secretly hoping, because we were committed to the ride, if it was on, and it sounded like a less than ideal ride. Signing up for the 65 mile ride, we agreed to the 35 mile since our spring was less than ideal for training, and we wanted to lessen our risk of injury on our first real ride of the season. As we approached the event, it was clearly on. The parking lot was filling up fast, and everyone was donning their rain gear. Adults and kids alike. What a great family event! Rain or shine, hundreds/thousands were there. As we hit mile 5 on the ride, the steady rains turned into a solid downpour, water was dripping down my face, arms, hands, and legs. My feet were sloshing in lakes, which were dammed up by my shoes, and the winds shifted bringing an intense wave of cold air. At this point, conversation with my hubby turned from the unspoken, we said we were going to do 35 miles, to, the 15 mile cut-off is close, it may be smartest to take that. So we did. Laughing at the sight of the insanity level of everyone around us, at the giddiness that we would never have chosen to ride on a day like today if we hadn't signed up for the event, and rounding a corner between a swamp and a pond hearing the frogs songs through the whipping wind, they sang like I've never heard before. Many would think it was an awful day, and running through my head was, it is always a perfect day for something...and although I may have thought this was not the perfect day or a bike ride, it absolutely was a perfect day for FROGS! And by the time we crossed the finish line, I was once more grateful. Grateful for the ability to ride. Grateful for the experience in the rain, the thoughts sparked by the frogs, and grateful for the downpour that happened prior to the 15 mile cut-off, because I was beginning to get extremely cold from the rain and wind...and although I could have listed off 25 gratitude's, my brain was on getting dry cloths on and being grateful for heat that worked in my truck. FUN! Yes, FUN! The deepest and most memorable memories often begin with less than ideal conditions, so may I ask, are the best days for frogs, also the perfect days for making memories?

Fellow Flowers is a women's running organization. They have
many great quotes and photos, and of course flowers.

I often encourage clients that struggle with exercise being fun, to find a work-out buddy. Find someone that you can enjoy the walk, jog, or fitness class with. This can help on a number of levels. It helps you stay accountable. It creates enjoyable memories with a friend. And, it helps to change your perspective on what you used to think of as "work" to a social event, and maybe you will begin to equate that activity with fun. Then, on days like today, when it is raining and dreary for the umpteenth day in a row, and knowing it would be much easier to stay cuddled up in bed, you will be grateful for your friend who is meeting you for your walk, bike, class, or whatever activity you enjoy. Because, friends help you through thick and thin, and they help you to have a good and fun reason to get out of bed on a dreary morning.

One more thought for the day. Why do I talk about morning work-out buddies? Because at 5:00 in the morning, very few things can get in our way. You can certainly have a work-out buddy in the evening as well, if that works best for you. No matter what time of day you choose, having someone to hold you accountable, who is counting on you to meet them somewhere, always helps, and maybe you can share fun memories on these perfect days for frogs too. :)

Are you looking for personal wellness coaching? E3 offers a much discounted price if you sign up with a friend or family member, because I know the benefits of having a work-out buddy. And if you go through coaching together, you can continue being there for each other after you complete your coaching sessions. Find more information on our website, and please feel free to email me with any questions you may have (info@e3twinports.com). And remember, I offer a FREE initial consultation, to determine if we are a good fit for each other.

So now I ask you, would you like to get out on the best days for frogs, and create perfect memories with your friends? Although it may be hard to get out the door on these days, I always enter the house smiling. :) And I believe that you can too. :)

Spreading Wellness: How have books changed your life?

Simplicity, covered wagons, hardships, family, friends, education, and history in the making. Almost every night, with Mom on the couch, us kids huddled around her, and Dad on his lazy-boy, Mom read us the "Little House on the Prairie" series. Those are some of my favorite memories as a child. I heard those stories over 3+ times, because my mom thought it was important for all of us kids to hear and appreciate the history of the Ingalls family. We reflected upon their lifestyle, struggles, and triumphs, and related it to our lives. My mom used it as a teaching tool, for appreciation, gratefulness, love of reading and learning, history lessons, and much more. While on family vacations, we went visit the homesteads of the Ingalls family, and still reflect upon it today. I cherish those memories and lessons that I learned as a child, and continue to remember the words my parents used, and the examples she used to help us understand gratefulness for what we have.

E3 Twin Ports, LLC owners books...a small sampling of
the books she uses to create her interactive educational
presentations and trainings. www.e3twinports.com
At some point in our lives, learning becomes more than memories with family, and learning about morals and values. Reading can be learning about life. We go from learning to read, to reading to learn...about ideas, thoughts, skills, etc. that are valuable to us. The internal drive for learning and teaching inside of my soul and spirit is strong, and I share a picture here of just a short sampling of books that are on my shelf. Books that I have read, and continue to reference on a regular basis in my personal and professional life. Ideas, skills, and concepts that I enjoy teaching about in corporate & organizational programming, and useful in individual wellness coaching. Sometimes I recommend a read to a client based upon their needs.

I have an idea for a women's health program, that would happen on a weekly basis, based around a book. Do you know anyone that would be interested? Maybe yourself? I'm asking if you do, to please send me an email with the answers to these questions. I'm trying to get a feel for the interest before I go ahead and outline the program and open up registration. Thank you!

Would you be willing and able to meet once a week? Or, biweekly?
Would meeting a total of 6 times or 8 times be best for you?
Would you be able to meet for breakfast? Say 7-8:30 a.m.? 8-9:30 a.m.?
If the cost included breakfast, education, and how the book ties into women's health and happiness, would you be willing to pay for this women's health class?

Now I ask you, how have books changed your life? For me, well, books have been a tool for learning and teaching, which has shaped me personally and professionally.

Spreading Wellness: What creates a feeling of internal, soul smiling joy within you?

Please take a few moments to decide how you are feeling. Happy, anxious, excited, sad, frustrated, calm, peaceful?

Do you know the internal joy, the smiling feeling of your soul? Imagine a time when you were giddy with joy, when happy hormones were flowing through your blood vessels. Pause, and allow yourself to relive that feeling for a few moments (or more if you'd like). :)

Now reflect, is there more than one experience that creates this feeling? Pause, and allow your brain to imagine that experience as well.

Re-assess your feelings. Did this little experiment change your emotional state?

Then ask yourself, can you create these experiences more often in your routine? Can you create these experiences daily? Weekly? Monthly? Or, even yearly? I urge you to add these experiences into your life, for these joyous moments may create more meaning in our lives, and allow us to lead healthier, happier and more meaningful lives. Sometimes I find that life takes over, and I dismiss seeking these opportunities of soul smiling joy.

This weekend I gave a presentation at the Northland Community Wellness Day on "Experiencing the health benefits of nature." One might ask how an audience member may experience nature indoors, while listening to a presentation....well, that is where I can work magic. :) All of my presentations are interactive, and the participants in this presentation did some reflection on soul smiling joyful experiences they have had in nature. It was fantastic. I could see the eyes of one of the audience members glaze over, and a soft, peaceful smile came over her face. When I asked her to share, she said she imagined herself in the woods, by a river, writing. Aaah. Wonderful! It worked for her. The emotional feeling of my audience changed after this experiential experience. YAY! Nature's health benefits can live with you, even when you are deprived of nature, and are sitting inside of four white walls and a cubicle at work. :)

I discussed and had the audience experience ways to improve their energy, whether they need to increase or calm their energy. The people who came, left with experiential tools to use, in their every day life, even when they are at work or school, to improve their energy. Energy and Empowerment through Exercise (Education, and Meditation Outdoors). That is the name of my business, and truly the mission of my work. If you know of an organization, corporation or group that is looking for a science-based health and wellness presenter, to provide training's to their employees (improving energy, empowering creativity, body mechanics/back safety, injury prevention, strength training for women, or a number of other holistic health topics), please send them my information. I am passionate about educating on topics surrounding health and happiness. Every presentation will be interactive. Every presentation will have at least a couple of experiential tools to help your organization, corporation, or group which will empower them with knowledge and tools, to improve their energy, through exercise, meditation, nature, and/or a number of other exercise science & positive psychology tools. For more information, please visit my website: http://www.e3twinports.com/corporate/

So now I ask you to share with me, what creates a feeling of internal soul smiling joy within you? For me, one experience includes spring sunshine and watching the seeds that we plant, grow into a flourishing garden of fruit, vegetables, and flowers. And, if you would be so kind to share, if you truly did the little experiment at the beginning of this blog, how did it work for you?

Spreading Wellness: If you could engage in one activity that benefits all areas of health, would you?

What would the world say if they heard there was a cure all pill? Take this one pill every day, you will feel better, and the only side effects include - increased happiness, and improved holistic health. What do you think people would do? Yes, I can just imagine the line at the pharmacy. Out the door, right?!

We all want quick fixes, band-aides instead of deep healing, because band-aides are easy, and we don't have time for the deep stuff, right? OK, I do know that not everyone wants the quick fix, but it is always easier to take the pill, than it is to do hard work to create healthy lifestyle habits, right?

What if I told you to try just one thing, every day, for one month, and that, if you do the hard work to accomplish this one thing, that you will feel better? It isn't a pill, but it is one lifestyle habit that has the side effects of improved happiness and holistic health. If you are willing to take this challenge, have doctors clearance for exercise, and use your own judgement on your safety level, then I ask you to answer the following questions (see below). Answer honestly. Then follow the instructions that come afterwards. In one month, I will write another blog about this very topic/challenge, and re-send the questions for you to compare your answers to the ones you answer today (keep your first set of answers in a find-able location). Then, I want you to share your results with me (no matter what the results were)...and if you were able to complete the challenge or not. Ready?

Please use the following 6 point scale to answer these statements.
0=Not at all descriptive, 1=Faintly descriptive, 2=Somewhat descriptive, 3=Fairly descriptive, 4=Very descriptive, 5=Extremely descriptive.
  • I look forward to going to work every day. ___
  • I practice bringing personal meaning to my life. ___
  • I feel a sense of belonging and connectedness with my community. ___
  • I have at least one person with whom I can share deep personal feelings. ___
  • I practice the habit of being connected to nature and the outdoors. ___
  • I can name 5 emotions that I experience daily. ___
  • I am physically active at least 30 minutes a day. ___
Please use the following 6 point scale to answer these last 2 statements.
0=Extremely unhappy, 1=Faintly happy, 2=Somewhat happy, 3=Fairly happy, 4=Very happy, 5=Extremely happy.
  • I rate my current momentary happiness as_______.
  •      Momentary happiness is how you are feeling right now.
  • I rate my authentic happiness as _______.
  •     Authentic happiness defined as: I have a pleasant life of pleasures, a good life of engagement, and     meaningful life. (Martin Seligman’s definition) Despite life's challenges, you are able to stay positive and resilient.
So what is this one thing? Take a 30 minute walk outside, preferably in nature. But if you are unable to access nature easily, a walk around your neighborhood works too. Remember, to use your common sense, and be watchful of crooked sidewalks and natural obstacles on the trails.

Click the above photo to make it larger to read.
Movement in nature has been shown to improve multiple areas of wellness, including all of the areas that are in E3's Wellness Tree . The questions that you answered above are related to a variety of areas of wellness. In one month, I will expand upon the research and examples of improving health through movement in nature. And to learn more, please join me this Saturday, April 9, for the FREE Northland Wellness Community Day at UMD, and the American Diabetes Association Walk! I am guiding a hike for the ADA Walk starting at the Field House at UMD (8:30 a.m.), then another hike for the NCWD at 10:30 a.m., starting at the Ramono Gym. Both hikes will take you from the event to Bagley Nature Areas Pond, and trailhead. At 12:45 I will be giving a very interactive educational presentation on "Experiencing the Health Benefits of  Movement in Nature." You will be able to hear, see, experience, and ask questions about the research of movement in nature, and how this ONE thing can improve your health and happiness. Will you join me? I sure hope so! :) I would love to meet my readers/followers in person. And I am stoked to hear your results to this little challenge in one month.

So now the question becomes, Will you engage in one activity that improves multiple areas of health and happiness for the next month? I look forward to hearing from you. :)
